Call for Nominations for the 2014 Dixon-Levy GSA Service Award

2014 Dixon-Levy GSA Service Award Winner Amirali Ghofrani2013 Dixon-Levy GSA Service Award Winner: Amirali Ghofrani, right.Do you know a student, staff, or faculty member who goes above and beyond the call of duty to improve graduate student life at UCSB?

If so, nominate that individual for the 2014 Dixon-Levy GSA Service Award.

Here are the award details from the GSA website:

"In 1998, the GSA established the Travis Dixon GSA Service Award, in recognition of graduate student Travis Dixon’s many years of service to the GSA. In 2002, the GSA renamed the award as the Dixon-Levy GSA Service Award, in recognition of graduate student Alan Levy’s many years of service to the GSA. The dual name of the award acknowledges that service to graduate students at UCSB comes in many forms, not only through serving as an elected GSA Officer, but also through advocacy of graduate student interests in a variety of other ways.

To nominate an individual, please fill out the 2014 Dixon-Levy GSA Service Award form and describe in detail the actions taken by the nominee to justify him or her receiving this prestigious award. GSA will be awarding three to four Dixon-Levy GSA Service Awards this year. All graduate students, undergraduate students, administrators, faculty, and staff are eligible for the award."

Important dates:

  • Nomination deadline is May 13.
  • Award recipients will be notified Tuesday, May 27.
  • Award recipients will be announced during the GSA Assembly Meeting on Tuesday, June 3.

MTD Emergency Service Reduction Public Forum in Isla Vista, Aug. 29

Santa Barbara Metropilitan Transit District (MTD) Staff have agreed to attend a public forum at a time and place accessible to UCSB students, staff, faculty, and non-student residents of Isla Vista. The public forum in Isla Vista will take place Aug. 29, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in Embarcadero Hall.

The Associated Students' office of the External Vice President for Local Affairs and the Graduate Students Association have put pressure on MTD to consult the student population and the non-student resident population in Isla Vista prior to making a final decision. Simultaneous English-Spanish interpretation will be provided and there will be pizza. This is one of the final forums on this topic before the board makes a decision on Sept. 17, following a penultimate board meeting Sept. 10. All MTD board meetings are open to the public.  Board members in attendance at past meetings have already heard from elected representatives so new faces from all corners of campus and from the Isla Vista community-at-large are invited.

UCSB graduate and undergraduate students pay for a fee-based bus superticket each quarter they are enrolled in classes. The contract UCSB holds with MTD states that MTD must hold a public forum with students in a time and location of convenience to students before enacting any service changes. As a part of the contract UCSB pays MTD approximately $1 million each year so students may use all the main bus lines MTD operates. UCSB students, graduate and undergraduate, comprise 12 percent of MTD's ridership; a proportion that rises each year.

MTD officials plan to elect an emergency transit plan that may be put into effect as early as January 2014 in the event it does not receive the federal funding it needs to operate at its current capacity. Graduate Students Association representatives have attended forums in the past month and have requested MTD review the proposal to cut weekend service on line 24x: UCSB/Downtown Express.

Campus and Isla Vista residents are encouraged to attend this public forum and learn more. This is an opportunity to have your voice heard!

For more information contact the Graduate Students Association.

End of the Year GSA Assembly Meeting and Awards Ceremony

The Graduate Students Association (GSA) will be hosting their last general assembly meeting of the academic year next week, June 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the GSA lounge, located directly above the MultiCultural Center theater, on the second floor of the MCC Building. At the meeting, the GSA will hold a special election for the new GSA Vice President of External Affairs and the new GSA officers will be officially introduced and sworn in front of the assembly.

In addition to the special elections and new officers' ceremony, the GSA will also present the Excellence in Teaching and Dixon-Levy awards to nine of our most dedicated and committed graduate students. This year the GSA received over 150 applications (twice that of most years) from the several hundred nominations submitted earlier in the quarter, and after careful deliberation, eight graduate student teaching assistants were selected for the Excellence in Teaching award. Please come and join us in celebrating our new GSA officers and graduate student awardees.

The 2013 Chicana/o Latina/o Mentoring Project

On May 30, there will be a panel discussion titled "The Myth of 'Selling Out' to Graduate School." The panel will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m. and end at 5 p.m. and will be held in the MultiCultural Center lounge. The discussion panel will feature several Chicana/o graduate students, most of which are enrolled across different disciplines at UC Santa Barbara. The graduate students on the panel will share a bit of their experiences, as Chicanas/os in higher education, and how those experiences helped them negotiate their way through their undergraduate degrees and eventually matriculate to graduate school. The panel discussion is open to all undergraduates and graduate students. As one of the organizers of the event put it, "Peer mentorship does not end simply because an individual enrolls in graduate school. It's up to all of us to help each other out from beginning to end."

Learn About Important UC SHIP Changes at GSA General Assembly Meeting May 7

UC SHIP logoDr. Mary Ferris, the Student Health Executive Director, and Richard Artoul, the UCSB Student Representative to the UC SHIP Advisory Board, would like to share an important message regarding changes in UC SHIP for the upcoming school year:

"Our Chancellor has announced the final decision that UCSB students will discontinue UC SHIP for medical coverage starting with the upcoming academic year (2013-14). We will continue with the current dental and vision coverage administered through UC SHIP. This will allow our campus better control of the plan, and stop any future losses.

This decision was reached after extensive consultation with students, faculty, and campus leadership, and we appreciate everyone’s contributions. In the next 1-2 weeks we will need to finalize the choice of insurance carrier and any changes we want to make in the benefit design. The new plan will be fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act health care reform regulations, and will include elimination of pharmacy caps and annual and lifetime maximums. Birth control will be covered at 100% without any co-pays required."

Dr. Ferris will be speaking at the GSA General Assembly Meeting on Tuesday, May 7 (6 to 8 p.m. in the GSA Lounge), to solicit student feedback and ideas for selecting the new insurance carrier and to answer questions.

All graduate students are welcome to attend the GSA General Assembly Meetings (free dinner is provided). This is a great chance to have your voice heard regarding important changes to student health insurance.
