Career Development
Are you interested in mentoring and teaching science to high school students? UCSB's School for Scientific Thought has the perfect opportunity for graduate students to spend five of their Saturday mornings during the Winter quarter teaching science and getting young high schoolers excited about a life in the sciences. $2000 fellowships are available. Applications will be accepted until December 8.
The School for Scientific Thought (SST) is a Saturday morning program for high school students in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. Each session lasts five weeks and will meet on Saturday mornings from 10:00am-12:15pm on the UCSB campus. The SST classes introduce students to concepts in science that extend beyond the typical high school science classroom - from nanotechnology to reverse engineering - and relate these concepts to "the real world". There âis no homework or examinations.
The SST instructors are outstanding young UCSB scientists and engineers who are engaged in doctoral or post-doctoral research and want to share their enthusiasm for science, and their expertise in current research, with high school students. Immediately following the class meetings on Saturday mornings, all SST participants will eat lunch together.
In addition to the excitement of learning concepts involved in current science and engineering research, high school participants in SST gain access to the university setting and to scientist and engineer role models. SST places motivated students from various local and regional schools in direct contact with each other, allowing relationships to develop based on mutual interest in the sciences.
SST instructor requirements and benefits:
-Partial fellowships ($2000) will be awarded to graduate students. Postdocs are not eligible for fellowships. Graduate students and postdocs may apply to co-teach.
-Materials budget provided.
-Training session to be scheduled for 3 days-12/12/19, 1/7/20 and 1/16/20 from 10am-2pm
-Teaching an SST course over five consecutive Saturdays in Winter 2020: 2/1, 2/8, 2/22, 2/29 and 3/7.
