Career Development
Are you graduating soon and looking for a job, but don't know where to begin during these tough times? Check out this article on all the career resources, links to job boards, and tips you might need to plan a job hunt during COVID-19. We are also highlighting our very own Graduate Student Internship Fellowship, which provides $2000 in funding for up to 5 graduate students undertaking an unpaid or low-paying internship. Deadline for the fellowship is April 19th.
COVID-19 has upended all of our lives , but amidst these trying times UCSB Graduate Career Services is here to help. We understand that many of you are still slated to graduate this summer and are actively looking for jobs and resources to chart your career path. While there are a lot of unknowns and changes to the job market there is still hope especially for highly educated PhD and Master's students such as yourself.
Career Services has set up a COVID-19 Career Resources page, which is a live-webpage to track on-going resources related to career and employer information. Included is information about which sectors are considered critical during this time and could be hiring as well as links to virtual career guides. Be sure to regularly check the webpage as more information will continue to be added.
To research which companies are currently hiring (and which are not) we recommend a website called Candor. FYI: the running list is created through crowd-sourced and self-reported measures so there are possible inaccuracies, but it is a good place to start, especially if you have a few companies in mind with whom you'd potentially like to work for.
One trend that is already increasing due to this crisis is remote and telecommute work. Here are some resources to help you find these jobs:
- This blog gives you a great peek into the five places to look for remote jobs.
- CareerSideKick and SkillCrush have assembled a list of the best remote job boards and job search engines to find full-time remote/telecommuting jobs in every industry.
- FlexJobs has created a list of twenty companies that allow all of their team members to telecommute 100 percent of the time and also currently have remote job openings. They have also created a list of the top 100 companies with remote jobs.
For graduate students looking for funding for internships, apply for the Graduate Student Internship Fellowship by April 19th. This fellowship provides $2,000-2,500 to assist graduate students with attaining experience related to career goals and professional development.
Email Vash Doshi, our Graduate Career Peer, with any questions. To learn more about this fellowship, read about what previous awardees learned from their experiences.
These are indeed tough times for any student, but even more so for those seeking jobs or internships.
