Job opening: software/data carpentry instructor at the Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory

The UCSB Library's Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory is seeking a Software/Data Carpentry instructor for the 21/22 school year. This is a 45% position that pays $29.50 per hour.

The instructor will be part of the Collaboratory team designing, organizing, and delivering Software and Data Carpentry workshops centered around R and/or Python, and will be based on campus.

This is a great opportunity for an un- or under-funded graduate student with a schedule flexible enough to be an active contributor to most of the Collaboratory's workshops throughout the year. Brief Summary of Job Duties

Reporting to the Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory, the Collaboratory Carpentry Community Lead organizes and delivers Software and Data Carpentry workshops, both online and in person. Using Github pages and markdown, the Lead creates and customizes standard Carpentries curriculum materials for local use.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training;

• Working knowledge and advanced skills in R/Rstudio and/or Python;

• Working knowledge of e-learning strategies including but not limited to courses (e.g., processes and technologies, etc.), and ability to lead effective online and in-person classroom experiences;

• Ability to obtain and maintain certified Carpentry Instructor status;

• Experience with web publishing using Github Pages;

• Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently, both synchronously and asynchronously;

• Proficiency in analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, collaboration and negotiation skills;

• Experience maintaining a professional relationship with learners, visitors, and other staff; and,

• Punctual, conscientious about completing tasks, and demonstrates a sense of responsibility.

Desirable Qualifications

• Working knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.;

• Demonstrated analytical skills to conduct analysis of course effectiveness and develop recommendations, demonstrating organizational and problem-solving skills;

• Proficiency in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective design life cycles of training and other learning and performance solutions to support the Carpentry program;

• Working knowledge of adult learning theories and education methodologies;

• Conversant with other commonly used Digital Scholarship tools: SPSS, Stata, SAS, MATLAB, NVivo, Gephi, Eviews, Eikon Datastream; Experience with data formats such as JSON, XML, or SQL; and,

• Data sciences coursework, particularly in the social sciences and humanities.
