Motivating Economic Investments for Coral Reef Restoration
Daniel Elkin
Coastal communities in the Caribbean rely heavily on healthy coral reefs for their economic vitality as they offer the benefits of sand stabilization, increased ecotourism, and coastal protection through flood mitigation. While coral reefs are threatened worldwide due to warming waters and a shifting climate, we are discovering new ways to more successfully restore this important ecosystem. This talk will discuss how The Nature Conservancy is reframing the benefits of coral to incentivize new sources of funding for reef restoration and how UCSB students are contributing to their mission.
How Do We Listen? A Look Into the World of 3D Audio
Shashank Aswathanarayana
Graduate Student in âMedia Arts & Technology
Just like we look at objects in 3D in daily life, we also listen to sounds in 3D. Listening in 3D helps us accurately locate where sounds are coming from. Accurate reproduction of this over loudspeakers and headphones makes our listening experience more realistic and immersive. In this talk, I will give a brief overview on how we listen. I will also give a brief history of the field, current research that is being carried out, and a look into the future. Lastly, the talk will include a listening demo in an 8.0 configuration.
This event will be moderated byâ ââRobert Hamm, âthe Assistant Dean of the Graduate Division at UCSB.
