Lunch & Learn: Decisions and Disciplines

Join us for our ​​​​​March Lunch & Learn featuring talks by graduate students in ​​​​Psychological & Brain Sciences and Comparative Literature! Lunch & Learn is co-sponsored by the Graduate Division, the Graduate Student Association, and the UCSB Library. ​Feed your mind and your stomach while socializing with grad students from across the campus!

Everyday we make decisions based on uncertain evidence, such as whether or not to greet a familiar individual. You might embarrassingly say "hello" to a stranger or possibly ignore a known acquaintance. If the outcome of one type of error seems disproportionately worse, then it is strategic to shift your decision criterion by requiring more or less memory evidence before recognizing a familiar person. Some people are quite good at improving decisional outcomes by shifting decision criteria while others are bad, which can lead to detrimental consequences in certain situations such as whether or not a police officer should shoot an individual who is possibly holding a gun.
