Actually Giving a Shift Can Improve Your Decisional Outcomes

Evan Layher
Graduate Student in Psychological & Brain Sciences

Everyday we make decisions based on uncertain evidence, such as whether or not to greet a familiar individual. You might embarrassingly say "hello" to a stranger or possibly ignore a known acquaintance. If the outcome of one type of error seems disproportionately worse, then it is strategic to shift your decision criterion by requiring more or less memory evidence before recognizing a familiar person. Some people are quite good at improving decisional outcomes by shifting decision criteria while others are bad, which can lead to detrimental consequences in certain situations such as whether or not a police officer should shoot an individual who is possibly holding a gun.

But You're Not a Scientist

Daniel Martini

PhD Student in Comparative Literature

What does it actually mean to work at the intersection of literature and neurocognitive science? This short talk offers examples from my own work and that of others to reveal the benefits and complexities of hands-on interdisciplinary work.

This event will be moderated by Rebecca Metzger, the Associate University Librarian for Research, Learning & Engagement at UCSB.
