The National Center for Atmospheric Research awards 2-year fellowships for 9 postdoctoral scholars to pursue research in collaboration with members of the High Altitude Observatory scientific staff. Deadline is January 6, 2017.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) awards 2-year fellowships for 9 postdoctoral scholars to pursue research in collaboration with members of the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) scientific staff related to solar/stellar interiors and variability (including asteroseismology and the solar-stellar connection), the lower solar atmosphere, corona and heliosphere, terrestrial and planetary atmospheres, and ionospheres and magnetospheres. Projects involving radiative transfer, hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, radiation hydrodynamics, plasma physics, and other topics are pursued both out of fundamental physical interest and for their application to the above areas of research.
Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed beginning in September or October; some flexibility is possible on the specific times of arrival and departure. Fellows develop research projects in collaboration with NCAR scientists, but all are expected to choose their own research directions and are responsible for the design and conduct of their own projects. Fellows will have access to the HAO Linux/Unix computers, NCAR supercomputer systems, and the HAO and NCAR libraries and data archives from Mauna Loa Solar Observatory and other facilities.
ELIGIBILITY
An applicant must have a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree granted in an area related to NCAR science, or must be able to complete such a degree and finish all thesis revisions and defense before starting the NCAR appointment. Applicants should interact with an HAO scientist when formulating a research plan. The program encourages applications from women and minorities.
STIPEND
Annual stipend of $63,300 in the first year and $64,900 in the second. Travel budget up to $3,500.
