BACKGROUND
Thomas W. Wilkins (1946-2015) was a middle school teacher in the Burbank Unified School District. His estate included a seven-figure donation to The Huntington which has been used to endow a capacity-building grant in the Education Division as well as this new research Fellowship encouraging diversity. The Huntington is hugely grateful for Mr. Wilkins' vision, leadership and generosity. As a proud Angeleno, he realized that he had the ability to leave a legacy that would benefit the diverse city he loved so much.
FELLOWSHIP OVERVIEW
The Thomas W. Wilkins Fellowship has been endowed to encourage greater diversity among the scholars who use The Huntington's collections to conduct advanced humanities research in the fields of history, literature, art, and the history of science. The contributions to diversity may include research focusing on underserved populations or understanding inequalities related to race, gender, disability or LGBT. In particular, however, the program is seeking applicants with the potential to bring to their academic and research careers the critical perspective that comes from their understanding of the experiences of members of groups historically underrepresented in higher education in the United States.
ELIGIBILITY
Candidates must either already hold the PhD or be graduate students who have advanced to doctoral candidacy. The award carries a stipend of $3500 per month for a maximum of two months.
