Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies Graduate Funding

OVERVIEW
The Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies works to build a supportive infrastructure for research collaboration and delivery by cultivating spaces for research among UCSB faculty, graduate students, and research partners, and publicly engaged organizations in the Global South/East. This commitment to research-among Area Studies specialists, students and faculty clustered in thematic groups, and geographic-based research hubs for participatory research in the Global South/East-ensures that the Orfalea Center is engaged with the most urgent issues of the day and has the capacity to create real impact and change. A global partner to be community-based researchers, activist researchers, university-based researchers, research-oriented NGOs, and change-makers in civil society in the Global South and East (these regions only: Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Latin America/Caribbean or the Middle East).

The Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies has funding for UCSB graduate students and faculty interested in being involved in one of the eight thematic research clusters:

• Global Genders and Sexualities;

• Structural Violence, Police/Prison Abolition, and Decoloniality;

• Resistance, Autonomy, Liberation;

• Social Data and the Archive;

• Future Infrastructures: Water, Energy and Justice;

• Transnationalizing the Study of the United States;

• Global Futures: Uncertainty, Displacement, Security

• Environmental Justice/Climate Justice.

DEADLINE
July 5, 2023

AWARD
Funding is available for UCSB Graduate Students (MA or PhD programs) for EACH of the eight clusters. All student applicants must have at least one full academic year of on-campus presence ahead of them. For PhD students, new applicants (not renewing applicants) need at least one more year of in-person presence on UCSB's campus and at least two more years left in their degree program.

Research funding will be awarded to collaborative projects that aim to produce publicly engaged knowledge, research resources, pedagogical tools, and/or classroom resources around one of our research cluster themes.
