The UCSB Blum Center for Global Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development is committed to promoting interdisciplinary and socially engaged research, learning, and action to address poverty and inequality. We believe that student ideas and action are a critical component of effectively addressing poverty and inequality. What about poverty and inequality moves you? How can we best address these issues in ways that resonate with your peers and others?

The Blum Center is recruiting a graduate student to work together with our staff, as well as another undergraduate student, to advance thinking and engagement on poverty and inequality at UCSB and UC-wide in 2018-19. The selected student will gain research and writing skills focused on issues of poverty and inequality, as well as facilitation, project management, team building, and public speaking experience. Main ​duties ​may ​include the following:

• Provide support and input on UCSB Blum Center programming and events on campus, such as guest lecture visits, workshops, research/recording in media projects focused on poverty and inequality, etc.

• Implement a signature project focused on poverty and inequality during Blum Poverty Action Day events in Spring 2019, in collaboration with other UC Blum Centers.

• Assist and lead student discussion groups on poverty and inequality.

• Draft an opinion piece on an issue of poverty/inequality that motivates you.

• Assist the Blum Center in building partnerships with relevant campus clubs at UCSB and across the UC system.

• Support efforts to foster a Blum Student community at UCSB and UC-wide.

• Participate in regular (i.e. monthly) meetings with Blum student leaders at other UC campuses via the Student Action Council for the Eradication of Poverty and Inequality, and weekly check-ins with Blum staff.

• Assist with updating and enhancing the UCSB Blum Center website, and Blum Network Medium Account.

• Assist in the creation of marketing/information materials, such as a Blum newsletter.

Requirements

• Able to work 5-10 hours/week throughout the 2018-19 academic year (this will be a paid hourly position).

• A registered UCSB student in good academic standing. Students from all majors and disciplines are eligible to apply.
