UCSB Career Services is excited to announce current recruitment for a second Graduate Career Peer Position, to begin employment in Summer 2022 and run through Spring quarter 2023, with the potential for continued employment through the 2023-2024 year.
This position will work with the current Graduate Career Peer and the Graduate Career Counselor to help graduate students on issues related to career development. This position will give the successful applicant valuable experience working in higher-ed administration and the opportunity to assist with program development and promotion. It will build skills in presentations and workshop development. During the COVID-pandemic, the location of the position is primarily remote with occasional on-campus needs that are primarily based at the Graduate Student Resource Center (Student Resource Building, Room 1215). The Graduate Career Peer reports to the Graduate Student Career Counselor, Lana Smith-Hale, through the Career Services Department.

- payment is $20.00 per hour, provided by Career Services
- includes partial fee support (equivalent to 25% TA fee support), provided by Graduate Division.
- 15 hours weekly (37.5% appointment).

Primary Responsibilities:

Assist with developing new content and editing promotional events/activities/career opportunities for graduate students on UCSB's GradPost. Skills needed: strong editing and writing skills; content promotion skills; familiarity or interest with basic graphic design

Manage data analysis projects, including an alumni tracking project, and help create data-informed analysis of graduate career services

Help with graduate student workshops (e.g., LinkedIn, Versatile PhD) by editing, enhancing, presenting, and creating new content for workshops. Skills needed: strong presentation skills; friendly and open interpersonal skills

Support efforts to create targeted programming for graduate students and assist with logistical aspects of program development (e.g., help with grad student career mixer, organize panel discussions). Skills needed: strong organizational skills; collaborative skills; initiative skills

Offer direct coaching and mentoring support to graduate students by holding weekly office hours for student appointments; advise and respond to student requests by email, phone, or in person; edit student resumes, CVs, and cover letters; and provide confidential support and make referrals as needed. Skills needed: positive attitude, desire to directly support graduate students, and mentoring/advising skills.
Additional Responsibilities:

Aid in developing relationships and outreach to different graduate programs and departments to provide information, resources, and outreach to graduate students;

Assist with publicizing events sponsored by Career Services (e.g., marketing campaigns like This Week @ Career emails, in-person promotion);

Work effectively and collaboratively with other peer advisors and staff in the Graduate Student Resource Center, Career Services, Graduate Division, and Student Affairs;
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Has completed one year of graduate study at UCSB, is in good academic standing, is within university time-to-degree standards, and meets all other standard student employment eligibility requirements;

Is energetic and knowledgeable about the UCSB campus

Has a positive and self-motivated attitude, and is able to work well independently or collaboratively;

Can represent graduate student interests and concerns and is attentive to the goals of excellence in UCSB's graduate education;

Has experience with or demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, and support students in Career Development or related experience;
-
Is able to work confidently with diverse student populations and is committed to practicing and promoting inclusivity;
-
Has effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills (meme-creating skills a plus!);

Previous experience in advising, teaching, and workshop/conference planning is desirable, although training will be provided;
-
Previous experience in web development is also desirable but not required.
Additional Benefits: With the appropriate eligibility and approval, the position may be combined with a GSR or TA position, as long as the combined hours do not exceed 75% appointment.
