Networks of Success: The Case of German Artist Hans Rottenhammer as Economic Actor in a Transcultural World
Sophia Quach McCabe
Graduate Student in Art History
Discussions of artist as genius have proliferated since the Renaissance with biographies of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. This type of thinking, however, overlooks the issue of artists as businessmen, economic actors, and strategists. The case of German artist Hans Rottenhammer (c. 1564-1625) illuminates the close relationship between art and economics, and makes clear the importance of using networks to gain artistic experience and access to leading patrons and long-distance markets. In this talk, Sophia will present her research on how Rottenhammer-as a foreign artist in one of the most competitive cultural centers of the early 17th century-achieved international success from Venice through his networks of artist-friends and German merchants. McCabe will also include a discussion of digital art history with her geo-mapping of Rottenhammer's paintings.
Future of Everything Focusing on AI, IoT, Smart Cities, and Automation
ââNaman Raval
Graduate Student in Technology Management
Innovation and its impact on our lives are expanding. We have already proven that we love to consume digital, AI-based products (with our rabid usage of the FANG vendors' offers on our smartphones). And, through digital that matters, the new machine is poised to transform the primary institutions of our society for the better. âIn this talk, Naman invited us to discover together technology, innovation, and its impact on the future of life for good.
This event will be moderated byâ âRebecca Metzger, Associate University Librarian for Research, Learning & Engagement for the UCSB âLibrary.
