Going Beyond What Is Expected: How ICE Raids Impact School Absenteeism in a Historic Migrant Community
Jacob Kirksey

Graduate Student in Education

Going Beyond What Is Expected: How ICE Raids Impact School Absenteeism in a Historic Migrant Community explores a population of critical interest in the current political and policy landscape: first and second generation immigrant-origin students. Many assume these students and their families are unaffected by immigration enforcement if they are not at risk of being deported. To the contrary, Going Beyond What is Expected examines the effects of heightened immigration enforcement activities by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office (ICE) during the Obama and Trump administrations between 2013-2017. Specifically, apprehensions and deportations of community members were logged from local media outlets during these years, and these documented raids and arrests were used to predict student absenteeism. Results indicate that ICE raids were associated with sharp increases in absenteeism in the following months, and this relationship disproportionately affected Hispanic students and migrant students. This presentation will present these results and invite a candid conversation from the audience regarding how schools and communities can support students.

Neurodegenerative Diseases: An Ion Mobility Perspective
Veronica Laos
Graduate Student in Chemistry

Diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS have been baffling scientists since their discovery over a century ago. In attempting to understand these elusive diseases, novel instrumentation and techniques have been developed to better understand the toxic agents involved in the proliferation of these disorders. I'll introduce and discuss ion mobility and the unique perspective it can bring to identifying and characterizing the culprits associated with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS, and how our work can be applied towards the development of effective drugs and therapies for the rising number of patients.

This event will be moderated by Rebecca Metzger, Associate University Librarian for Research, Learning & Engagement at the UCSB Library.
