Grammar is complex and often nuanced. Consider the following examples:
My friend Sam is coming to dinner.
And
My friend, Sam, is coming to dinner.
Those two commas actually make the sentence mean something entirely different--though most people don't know that. Making matters worse is that we all know more grammar, intuitively, than we have words to express. This is why âpeople somehow know to pâlace a comma after an introductory infinitive phrase, despite having zero idea about what that means.
