Creating and Exploring Neighborhoods of Research
Sara Lafia
The experience of seeking and discovering scholarly information is changing as researchers transition from using physical search spaces to digital ones. While library bookshelves spatially organize books into subject neighborhoods that enable their serendipitous discovery, today's digital research data repositories have largely failed to support such browsing. My research re-creates thematic neighborhoods by organizing research data into topic maps and networks based on their descriptions. This approach spatially supports data discovery for researchers and increases their awareness of related research across disciplines by showing them where their work is situated within a research neighborhood and over a broader research landscape.
Wasting Time at Work
Camille Endacott
âGraduate Student in Communication
Time is a scarce and valuable resource. In organizations, how time is invested affects performance, collaboration, and innovation. The problem is that many of us find ourselves in what researchers have called a "time famine" -- having too much to do and not enough time to do it. As I've researched different occupations and organizations, I've noticed the tensions that arise around time and how our understanding of wasted time shapes our own work identities. Drawing on my previous research on independent contracting occupations and my dissertation work on artificially intelligent scheduling, I will discuss how the meanings we give our time shape and are shaped by the work we do.
This event will be moderated byâ Rebecca Metzger, the Associate University Librarian for Research, Learning & Engagement at UCSB.
