Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent/legal resident pursuing doctoral work in health-related research? If so, you are likely eligible for the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) F-31 predoctoral fellowship. An F-31 is one of the most preeminent honors that a young scholar can receive, and it sets up a pathway for future NIH funding at the postdoctoral and professorial levels. In addition to the distinction, the F-31 provides research security and freedom by providing graduate students with ~$25,000 annually in addition to annually covering 60% of tuition and fees (up to $16,000). Furthermore, as a training fellowship, F-31 recipients are provided close mentorship.

But applying to the NIH F-31 is a multi-layer process that requires understanding how to navigate the multiple institutes within the NIH, contacting program officers, securing a faculty mentor, and other components. Simply put, this is a complex process that many students feel under-prepared to tackle. Thus, to kick off the campus' inaugural NIH F-31 Success Series, please join us at our first presentation: an info session explaining what the F-31 is and how to apply. This presentation will be led by Dr. Crystal Botham, Stanford University's Director of Research Development. Dr. Botham will demystify the F-31 process, provide timelines for application construction, and answer any questions attendees have. This presentation is ideal for anyone interested in applying to NIH funding--whether or not the F-31 is the target--and for faculty looking to learn how to support their students applying to NIH funding.
