Comparing the Self-Assembly Process of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 Envelope Protein Golgi-Targeting Regions
Xikun Liu
Graduate Student in Chemistry & Biochemistry

The Envelope (E) protein in SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 plays a key role in the coronavirus life cycle. Interestingly, of the four total amino acid differences between SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 E proteins, two of them are located in the Golgi-Targeting Region. The differences in primary structure could affect the functions of the two E proteins. In this talk, I will compare the self-assembly process of those two fragments that contain the Golgi-targeting information.

When Cooking Gets Political: Exploring Cookbooks as Historical Sources
Elizabeth Schmidt
Graduate Student in History

This presentation will introduce and contextualize a small sample of eighteenth-century British cookbooks, both manuscript and published sources. We all have to eat and someone has to prepare that food; so how did concepts like "gender roles," class, and foreign tensions influence the ways in which food was prepared and talked about? How did men and women in the British Empire see the world around them through the lens of food?

This event will be moderated by Kristen LaBonte, Research & Engagement Librarian at UCSB.
