The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is excited to announce that a new team of experts will be providing workshops, trainings, and consultations, at no cost to units and departments. These will be led by Ben and Rebecca Refuerzo, who have distinguished themselves for their work on social justice and Anti-Racism. Read on for more details!

The services offered include a DEI Education Package for each unit:

1. Racial Microaggressions Workshop: This workshop will provide an overview of how (Racial) Microaggressions are the enacted form of Implicit Biases, exploring the internal dilemma victims experience, the types of racial microaggressions, their hidden messages, offenders' typical responses, the impact on the injured party, and what one can do to make microaggressions 'visible.'

2. Power & White Privilege Workshop: (Prerequisite: Racial Microaggression workshop) This workshop will provide an overview of how Power and Privilege operate in our daily lives, beginning with a review of wealth distribution and who has authority and control over rules that direct us. You will explore some of the history of these generational advantages and differences between people of color and whites, and discuss how being part of the majority white culture is seen as "the norm" and thus grants individuals "the benefit of the doubt." Lastly, you will look at how disadvantage and oppression are the other side of privilege and end with a working definition of Racism.

3. Unit DEI Plan consultations (Prerequisites: Racial Microaggressions Workshop and Power & White Privilege Workshop): Although units may have already created unit DEI plans, such plans should be viewed as a living document. The consultation service will help units to better address their needs and to implement research informed actions to achieve DEI goals.

There is a maximum of 50 participants per/workshop session and each workshop is open to faculty, staff and graduate students.
