Academic publishing has changed significantly in recent years, and it's important for researchers to understand the publishing landscape and their options within it. Join the Library's Sherri L. Barnes for a lunchtime brown bag info session covering a wide range of topics on scholarly publishing.
Academic publishing has changed significantly in recent years due to the Internet, majority control of scholarly publishing by five giant for-profit commercial publishers (Elsevier, Nature, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley), and scholars' efforts to regain control. There is no longer one scholarly publishing model for any discipline, and it's important for researchers to understand the publishing landscape and their options within it. Join Sherri L. Barnes, the UCSB Library's Scholarly Communication Program Coordinator, for a lunchtime brown bag info session where she will present an overview of scholarly publishing today and facilitate a discussion on the role of authors, universities, libraries, and societies. She will also discuss types of academic publishers, open-access publishing as a new norm, criteria for selecting a publisher, author rights, and best practices for early career researchers.
