UC Santa Barbara has been recognized by the U.S. Department of State for its contributions to two different scholarship programs: The Fulbright Program and the Gilman International Scholar Program. Both distinctions have a focus on diversity and inclusion.
The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program, and supports students to do research, teach, or study for a year in places all over the globe. UC Santa Barbara is one of only 35 institutions to be recognized as a Fulbright HSI Leader, a designation that highlights noteworthy engagement of selected Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) with the Fulbright Program. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries or areas and world regions. UCSB was recently honored as a Large Institution, 20-year Gilman Top Producer. In fact, among large institutions, UCSB has produced the most Gilman recipients - 401 students - since 2001, who have studied in countries from Chile, to Ghana, to Singapore.
