The 2018 Graduate Student Internship Fellowship ​was awarded to four students who demonstrated how their Summer or Fall 2018 work experience would be impactful for their career trajectory. We followed up with our fellows from last year about their experiences and ​here is what they had to say! Read on to be inspired to apply for the 2019 cycle - the application opens January 7.

Our final featured student, Alexandra Noi, is moving to Santa Barbara from Moscow with her husband, Evgeny (featured yesterday). Read on to learn more about ​her research on comparative totalitarianism and some of her plans for when she arrives at UCSB!

Evgeny Noi is coming to UCSB with his wife, Alexandra (who will be featured tomorrow), from Russia to pursue his Ph.D. in Geography. Evgeny is excited to begin his studies at UCSB, where he hopes to help solve mobility and health care challenges in urban places.

Melanie Adams is an incoming Ph.D. in​ Mechanical Engineering from Brooklyn, New York. She received her undergraduate degree from MIT, where she studied Materials Science and Engineering. Read on to learn more about ​​Melanie's childhood in New York and about her travel plans during her graduate program!

Trevor Auldridge has been busy since he graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor's degree in Sociology. He worked at the W.E.B. DuBois institute at Harvard University and also spent the last two years in the City Year Americorps Program in Northern California. Trevor is coming to UCSB to pursue a Ph.D. in Sociology.

Grad school marks the next chapter in Fernanda Montero's adventure. She is coming to UCSB from Mexico City, where she worked with the Mexican government and United Nations to channel more financial resources for nature conservation. She is very excited to ​come to UCSB and continue her work "financing nature" in the Bren School for Environmental Science and Management.

Next up in our 2018 Incoming Grad Series is Tanner Cassidy, who is coming to UCSB from Chicago to pursue a Ph.D. in ​​Music, ​​after completing his undergraduate degree ​at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The 2018 Incoming Grad Series continues with Meenakshi Shyamsundar, an incoming master's student in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Bangalore, India. Learn more about ​Meena's research interests and what she is looking forward to at UCSB!

First up in our 2018 Incoming Grad Series is Sean McBride, who is entering the Ph.D. program in Physics. Learn more about how Sean developed his passion for physics (hint: Pokemon was involved) as well as his interests outside of school – including baking bread!

UCSB welcomes 835 new grad students into its ranks ​at the end of this month. This group is the most diverse group of incoming students in UCSB history! In this Q&A, UCSB art history scholar John Vincent (JV) Decemvirale talks about his research and his summer spent combining mentorship and advocacy as Juan Manuel Silverio's advisor on Hacer, Deshacer, y Rehacer, an insightful exhibition and panel discussion featuring paintings, drawings and other art experiences showcasing works from the Self Help Graphics & Art community arts center.

This spring, Jo Palazuelos-Krukowski (Department of Theatre and Dance), Luke Janes (Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology), Amanda Gersten (English Department), and Dennis Manjaly Joshy (Mechanical Engineering Department) were each awarded the inaugural Graduate Student Internship Fellowships.
