The UCSB Graduate Division seeks to hire a Graduate Diversity Officer (Academic Coordinator II) who is responsible for providing overall direction and implementation of a retention program for students whose backgrounds enhance the diversity of graduate education at UCSB. Reporting to the Dean of the Graduate Division, the Diversity Officer is responsible for the development and implementation of retention strategies that foster diversity and support the overall mission of the University.
In consultation with the Faculty Director of Graduate Diversity, the Graduate Diversity Officer (GDO) is delegated authority and responsibility for a wide variety of academic activities. The role of the GDO is to increase the academic success of an increasingly diverse population of graduate students, including students who are first generation, underrepresented women and minority students, students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, students with disabilities, LGBTQ students, and student veterans. The GDO uses initiative, independent judgment, experience, originality, and networking skills to develop and implement strategies for serving this student population and fostering their academic and professional success. The GDO supervises the 50% Assistant Director for Diversity Initiatives.
Major Responsibilities
I) Working within a budget, develop and oversee retention programming for students from non-traditional graduate populations. This includes the Graduate Scholars Program, in addition to innovative initiatives or programs, such as courses that introduce students to graduate education, summer bridge programs, etc.
II) Develop and implement assessments of the efficacy of these programs and write analytical reports and recommendations to submit to the Graduate Dean.
III) Create and maintain a home office for the Graduate Scholars Program that provides an open, welcoming environment; advise individual students, help them adjust to life as a graduate student at UC Santa Barbara, and connect them with campus resources as appropriate.
IV) Coordinate with members of the Graduate Student Support Network and with graduate student groups, such as the Graduate Student Association, the Black Graduate Student Association, SACNAS, and Women in Science and Engineering, to ensure coordination of events and programming, and that the academic needs of subgroups of the graduate population are addressed.
V) Serve on the Graduate Dean's Advisory Council on Diversity and represent the Graduate Division in oral reports to the Chancellor's Outreach and Advisory Board.
VI) Research, identify, apply for, and administer grants from government agencies and private foundations designed to promote programs that recruit and retain graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. and demonstrate engagement with supporting non-traditional populations in the academy. Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience with public speaking required. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with: (1) graduate mentoring; (2) course design and implementation; (3) teaching at the advanced undergraduate or graduate levels; (4) grant writing and administration; (5) project implementation; (6) budgetary oversight; (7) program evaluation.
