Outlining isn't merely that strategy you learned in elementary school to figure out your main points. There are many types of outlining with different purposes. The value of outlining is that it helps the writing "think," which in turn helps you produce and sharpen your writing. This workshop on May 8 will teach participants a variety of different outlining techniques for writers in all stages of production. Sign up today!

Thinking is a process. This is why when you have a problem, you might spend hours coming up with a solution--a solution that only takes a minute to put into action. It would have been great if you had reached the solution right away, but answers rarely arrive that way. Though we know, somewhat, what we want as an end product, we must mentally wrestle to arrive at a conception of that product.

Writing is no different because writing, too, is an act of thinking. Very often we "kind of" know what we want to write, but we have no clear idea of what/how to write it. For instance, many of us know the final point we want to express, but how do we write the introduction to carry readers to that point? Outlining is one answer.

Outlining isn't merely that strategy you learned in elementary school to figure out your main points. There are many types of outlining with different purposes. Some forms are used to help us figure out what we want to explore. Others are useful for writing we have already completed to check that what we want to say is actually on the page. The value of outlining is that it helps the writing "think," which in turn helps you produce and sharpen your writing. This workshop will teach participants a variety of different outlining techniques for writers in all stages of production.
