Studying Sexual Consent Qualitatively

Cierra Sorin
Graduate Student in Sociology

With the rise of anti-violence activism across college campuses and the more recent #MeToo movement, studies of consent have increased significantly over the last decade. However, most of this research continues to center quantitative methods, leaving room for further study using qualitative methods. In this interactive conversation, I will share some of my ideas about the need for qualitative studies of sexual consent and elicit feedback from the audience for a paper I am currently drafting.

The Price of Autonomy in Large-Scale Systems

David Grimsman
Graduate Student in Electrical & Computer Engineering

Many important large-scale systems - such as automated warehouses, precision agriculture environments, traffic systems, and ride-sharing apps, to name a few - are not or cannot be centrally controlled. Rather, they are comprised of many autonomous components (robots, humans, software, etc.), each endowed with its own goal, data set, model of the environment, and capabilities. Not surprisingly, many challenges arise when designing such systems to meet a common goal. This talk will discuss some of these challenges, including some unintuitive phenomena that can arise from this autonomy.

This event will be moderated by Kristen LaBonte, Research & Engagement Librarian at the UCSB Library.
