Supernovae: Observations of Dying Stars
Jamie Burke
Graduate Student in Physics

Supernovae are the energetic explosions of dying stars, visible from hundreds of millions of light years away. In this talk I will provide some background on what supernovae are and discuss how I observe them using the telescopes of Las Cumbres Observatory (based in Goleta). I will conclude by talking about a recent paper I submitted on a particularly interesting supernova.

Women Writing War Memories
Linshan Jiang
Graduate Student in East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies

This talk will discuss how female writers craft memories of war experiences in their works about the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). While narratives of war tend to be dominated by masculinist and nationalist discourses, female writers transcend the conventional remembrance of the war, demonstrating their subjectivity through affective intimacy and the emotional labor of shared, embodied memory.

This event will be moderated by Jane Faulkner, Research & Engagement Librarian at UCSB.
