Learn about all of the cool tools and services that the Library's Collaboratory has to offer, and see exhibitions of grad students' work at an open house event this Thursday.

Monday, April 11th, 2016 - 3:15pm

As part of the Graduate Student Showcase, the UCSB Library's Collaboratory will be hosting an open house and exhibition for graduate students to come and learn about all of the awesome resources they provide. Located on the 2nd floor of the Library (Mountain Side), the Collaboratory is a new technology-driven space that provides support and data services for UCSB researchers - from access to content, databases, and archival data to help with evaluating data, basic software, and research support. The open house will take place this Thursday, April 14, from 3-5 p.m.

Here are some of the research and services that will be on exhibition:

  • Lisa Han is a graduate student in Film and Media Studies, and she will be displaying her data visualization work using Twitter data obtained from Crimson Hexagon. Her research focuses on issues of surveillance and social media, particularly in relation to transduction and crowdsourcing.
  • Benjamin Lei works at UCSB's Center for Spatial Studies and is currently developing UCSB's official Interactive Campus Map as a web app with mobile functionality, which he will demonstrate during the open house.
  • Sara Lafia is a graduate student in Geography whose research focuses on geographic information retrieval techniques for spatial data discovery, particularly in an academic context. At the Collaboratory exhibition, she will be demonstrating UCSB's OpenData portal and the next steps for modeling a linked data portal in the near future.

In addition to these graduate student presentations, Collaboratory staff will be on hand to discuss the data and tools available to UCSB researchers.
