David Hwang"LEDs: Lighting the Path to the Future"
David Hwang
Graduate Student in Materials

David works on making our mobile electronics last longer and have more functionality by improving the energy efficiency of the displays inside them. At the heart of displays are pixels made of various light sources. David works on making highly efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and will show how he goes from a bare piece of material to one that emits light.

Sherri Lynn Conklin"Permissible Wrong-Doing"
Sherri Lynn Conklin
Graduate Student in Philosophy

Moral dilemmas are usually taken to be a conflict between duties - like the duty to keep a lunch date and the duty to help someone in need. On the one hand, it seems like we really ought to help a person in need. On the other hand, it seems like failing to keep the lunch date is some kind of moral failure, even if you know the other person will understand. Yet, it seems somewhat inconsistent to say that an action is both wrong and permissible. After all, if the action is wrong, then why would we be permitted to do it? Sherri will talk about why we can coherently say that an action is an instance of permissible wrong-doing and the philosophical ramifications of making such claims.

This event will be moderated by Robert Hamm, Graduate Division's Director of Graduate Student Professional Development.
