"Paris-American: Expatriate Newspapers and Interwar Community"

Paris' storied interwar American community-whose members included Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Djuna Barnes, and many other iconic artists-was served by international editions of several American newspapers, keeping those abroad abreast of the news from home, as well as publishing local events and gossip. Nissa's talk will delve into the nearly entirely unexamined archive of one of these papers, the Paris edition of the Chicago Tribune, to discuss how an expatriate newspaper united and divided Paris' early twentieth century Americans.

Nanostructured noble metals exhibit strong absorbances in the visible region due to their free bound electrons. When properly structured, we can use these strong absorbances to produce 'hot electrons' that can be used to do work. Here, Jose will present a general talk about the current applications and future outlook of his lab's work in catalysis and solar-to-energy conversion.
