"Economic Change and Farmers Markets in Contemporary Cuba"

The 2014 announcement that Cuba and the United States would restore diplomatic relations after 53 years of separation led many to believe Cuba was headed for large-scale change. The Cuban economy however, began to shift after the fall of the Soviet Union when elements of the market were used to "serve a pressing socialist objective," a process which has intensified under Raul Castro. In this talk, Miles draws on rich ethnographic data to examine one particular measure which has been the subject of much debate: farmers markets where entrepreneurs use supply-and-demand pricing. While private businesses provide important incentives, not all can access the products being sold. The opinions of buyers and sellers in these markets provide valuable insight into the challenges faced in the new Cuban economy and perceptions of change in general.
"Polymer Self-Assembly: a Love-Hate Relationship Creates Order"

In nature, interactions between disparate parts, such as oil and water, lead to new and unexpected shapes. In materials science, polymers self-assemble into complex, organized patterns as a result of these interactions. This talk will provide a cursory look into the world of polymer self-assembly and its potential applications in data storage and drug delivery.
