As part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES), the Department of Education set aside a portion of those funds for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to use for additional grants for students with expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the Coronavirus. With these additional funds, UC Santa Barbara's Graduate Division will provide 50 summer stipends of $7,000 to doctoral students whose research and progress toward the completion of their degrees were severely impacted by the global pandemic.
You are eligible for this program if you meet the following criteria:
- Currently registered in a UCSB doctoral program (spring and/or fall 2021)
- Experienced demonstrable delays in research and/or academic progress due to the global pandemic
Please Note: This program is open to ALL doctoral students: domestic, international, or undocumented. All applications will be reviewed, but priority consideration will be given to advanced graduate students.
To apply for this grant, please complete and submit an application here. The deadline to apply is Friday, July 9, 2021. As part of the application, you'll be asked to provide a statement explaining how COVID impacted your progress (500 words maximum). For example, increased care responsibilities, delayed access to field sites, inability to access institutionally-owned research equipment and facilities, delayed data collection due to destruction or loss of live samples, inability to complete requirements needed for milestones (e.g. qualifying exams, proposal defense, dissertation defense), etc.
After the submission deadline, a committee will review applications and inform you of the decision as soon as possible. Please note that, in some cases, the committee may contact you to request supporting documentation before a decision is made.
For those awarded, stipends will be paid automatically and should appear in your bank account within two weeks of award notification. If you have not already done so, you may also want to consider setting up direct deposit through the BARC office, which will allow you to receive funds more quickly than via a mailed check. Instructions on how to set up direct deposit can be found here.
