Come hear about the expeditions of grad students Kelsey Bisson and Eleanor Arrington who set sail on a research expedition in the Santa Barbara Channel in December 2017, just three weeks after the Thomas Fire ignited. Their research team – which also included a musician, videographer, and illustrator – will discuss the unique opportunity they had to investigate the ​real-time impact of ash deposition on the coastal ocean.

Come on out to the UCSB Graduate Student Teaching Symposium on May 4, a showcase of teaching excellence with panel discussions and presentations about how to secure teaching jobs in higher education. Registration is FREE, and graduate students are also invited to submit presentation proposals by April 15.

Participants need to have completed at least two of the CCUT requirements.

Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement can be a challenge, and is required for most teaching positions. As a participant in this workshop, you will work through a series of exercises to help you reflect on your teaching, and by workshop end you will have a draft outline of your teaching.

The first day of section can help you set the tone for the classroom culture that you want to develop this spring. In this workshop, we will discuss approaches and activities for the first day of section that will get students thinking, talking, and participating from Day 1.

Interested in a career in higher-education teaching? In this mock group interview, participants will have a chance to practice talking about their teaching. To foster authenticity, we will induce a mild degree of nervousness by videotaping participants. During a private follow-up session, you will have the opportunity to review your performance on videotape with an Instructional Consultant.
