The UCSB Center for Spatial Studies presents the 2018 Spatial Lightning Talks on Friday, February 9. This annual series of 3-minute lightning talks brings together speakers from across the UCSB campus (including several graduate students) as well as the local community to enlighten the crowd on a broad range of spatial topics.

Apply for a two-year appointment to the University of California Board of Regents, the governing body for the entire 10-campus University system. The appointed Student Regent will receive a fee waiver or scholarship that covers mandatory University fees and tuition during the academic years when they serve. Application deadline is February 25.

Grading student work is often huge time commitment for TAs, which can sometimes lead to less thorough or effectiveness grading. In this workshop, you will learn some tips to increase efficiency of grading, as well as suggestions for time management and allocation that can help you plan out and evaluate your grading load.

Come hear from other graduate students who have gained experience through their internships, including insights on the application process, the value of internships, and more. Both STEM and SHEF graduate students will share valuable insights on how to include internships as part of your graduate school experience.

Come to a special talk and Q&A by UCSB alumna Dr. Niki Sandoval, current education director of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. Learn about her journey and the importance of time management and work/life balance.

Join us for a seminar by Dr. Jessica E. Snyder and Dr. Nils J. Averesch. In addition to their research on bioengineering, Drs. Averesch and Snyder will discuss how they came to work at NASA Ames, how they fit into the work there as early career scientists, and what career opportunities are available for those who are interested in gaining similar experiences.

UCSB's University and Community Housing Services will be hosting a workshop for graduate students to meet with property providers and learn about all your housing options for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The Graduate Student Resource Center will be hosting a workshop on writing a research statement for an academic position. We will cover methods of organizing experience, types of content to include, and the tone you should set in your statement.

A statement of teaching philosophy is now required for most teaching positions and can also be helpful in helping you design and develop the classes you teach. In this workshop, you will participate in activities that will help you reflect on your teaching and also draft an outline of your teaching philosophy statement.

Instructional Development is offering a workshop for students who plan to complete a Certificate in College and University Teaching through UCSB. This workshop will assist doctoral students who have completed at least two of the CCUT requirements in presenting their teaching materials, documenting their student ratings, and more.

The UCSB Public Speaking Initiative is seeking an individual with a particular talent for and interest in maintaining and improving their website and online presence. Salary commensurate with experience but normally in the range of $25-30 per hour for approximately 30 hours per quarter.

The Office of the Registrar will be conducting an online training on FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) this winter quarter to provide more in-depth, comprehensive training for faculty and graduate students.

There are ranges of employment visas, as well as U.S. permanent resident status, that can allow you to work in the U.S. after you finish your UCSB program. Join immigration law specialist Adam Green, a practicing attorney in the Los Angeles area, for a free workshop on February 2 about employment immigration issues, particularly the transition from student statuses to employment statuses.
